Electric Vehicle Fire Damages Maryland Home and Multiple Vehicles

A 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning caught fire while charging Tuesday night in Joppa, Maryland, causing significant damage to the owner’s property, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

The incident occurred as the owners were preparing for bed when they heard an unusual sound and discovered their electric vehicle ablaze in the driveway. The homeowner sustained burns to his right hand while attempting to disconnect the charging cable, and his subsequent efforts to extinguish the fire with a garden hose proved unsuccessful.

The fire spread to the attached garage, destroying two vehicles stored inside. While firefighters managed to prevent the flames from reaching the main living areas, the residence at 315 Watertons Way suffered heat, smoke, soot, and water damage.

Fire officials determined that the blaze originated in the vehicle’s battery pack area. The home’s smoke alarms did not activate since the fire started and remained primarily contained to the exterior of the structure.

The incident has temporarily displaced a family of four, who are currently making their own accommodation arrangements.
