When you think of celebrities, “pro-life” may be the last phrase to come to mind. Yet they’re out there. You just have to look.
Some of them, like actors Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, Kirk Cameron (and his sister, Candace Cameron Bure), and pro-athlete (football and baseball) Tim Tebow may not surprise you.
So we didn’t list them.
Those who made the list, however, you may not have considered, and a few may totally surprise you.
Here’s Newsmax’s list of the top 10, listed in alphabetical order.
Justin Bieber:
A 30-year-old pop singer-songwriter pro-life? From Canada yet? No way, right? Wrong.
In a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone, Bieber announced that “I really don’t believe in abortion. I think [an embryo] is a human. It’s like killing a baby.” He no doubt picked that up from his mom, Pattie Mallette.
When she discovered she was pregnant with Justin at age 17, she was under pressure to seek an easy way out — an abortion. “I just knew I couldn’t. I just knew I had to keep him,” Mallette told Today host Kathie Lee Gifford.
“And, do the best. I — you know, I didn’t know how I was going to do it. But I just knew that I couldn’t — I couldn’t abort. I had to do my best. I had to see what I could do. And I was determined to do whatever it took.”
Bieber’s wife doesn’t share that belief. After Roe v. Wade was struck down in 2022, she came out as pro-abortion.
Andrea Bocelli:
Like Bieber, the mother of international classic tenor Bocelli was pressured to get an abortion — but the pressure was more intense in her case because it was her own physicians pressuring her.
They feared that her child might be born disabled.
She refused, and her son Andrea was born with congenital glaucoma. He’s now totally blind but loves life as he wows audiences around the world with his powerful voice. He also praises his mother’s decision and is 100% pro-life because of it.
Eleven years ago Bocelli surprised churchgoers at Easter Mass with a performance at St. Patrick Church in Miami Beach, singing to the glory of God.
Celine Dion:
Before we get started here, recite the vowels out loud in Celine Dion’s name out loud without smiling.
This French-Canadian singer’s mother also considered abortion, and consulted her parish priest on the matter — she was already overwhelmed with 13 children. The priest talked her out of an abortion and another singer with an amazing voice was born.
The fact that Dion’s life was spared in the womb prompted her own commitment to life and family.
She told People magazine in 2001, “My success is my family. My life is to be a mom. It is what I enjoy the most. It is my most amazing reward. I will take a chance with my music. I don’t take risks with my family.”
Kelsey Grammer:
An actor best known for his role as Dr. Frasier Crane in the sitcom “Cheers,” which carried over in a spin-off “Frasier,” Grammer has never been shy about his pro-life stance.
“It gets a bit dishonest to call something reproductive rights when you clearly have a choice well before a baby is conceived,” he told the Times of UK in 2016. “If someone has to die as a result of rape, then we should kill the rapist — not the unborn child.”
He’s also been photographed displaying pro-life T-shirts.
Kathy Ireland:
When super-model Ireland’s career began taking off as a teenager, she soon became a cover girl on magazines like Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and of course, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
At that time Ireland considered herself pro-choice, just like most others in the business.
Her views on the subject changed when she started looking into the science of conception.
“What I learned is at the moment of conception, a new life comes into being,” Ireland told Mike Huckabee in a 2010 interview. “The DNA, the genetic blueprint is there, the sex is determined, the blood type is determined, the unique set of fingerprints is there.”
Jack Nicholson:
This actor-filmmaker and three-time Academy Award winner is known for memorable performances in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “A Few Good Men,” and “The Shining.”
Like some of the celebrities mentioned above, his mother was under enormous pressure to have an abortion.
She decided against it at the last minute, and because of that decision, Nicholson has entertained generations of moviegoers, and he’s always remained pro-life.
“I’m very contra my constituency in terms of abortion because I’m positively against it,” he said, explaining his position on the issue. “I don’t have the right to any other view. My only emotion is gratitude, literally, for my life.”
Chuck Norris:
The Hollywood tough guy, martial arts enthusiast, and star of the TV series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” was, like most Hollywood types, a Democrat. But he switched to the Republican Party when Democrats became too liberal.
One issue of particular importance is unrestricted abortion.
“It is a violation of government’s primary purpose: to protect innocent life,” he said, and cited Thomas Jefferson, who in 1809 wrote: “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.”
Martin Sheen:
The father of actors Charlie Sheen and Emilio Esteves is known for a long string of blockbuster performances in films like “Apocalypse Now” and “Badlands.”
But the role that may align closest to him may be that of liberal Democratic president Josiah “Jed” Bartlet in the NBC TV series, “West Wing.”
Sheen considers himself a liberal except on the issue of abortion.
His resolve is so strong on this issue that Feminists for Life named him as a “Remarkable Pro-Life Man” in 2001, and he was the subject of a glowing LifeNews interview recently.
Ben Stein:
Lawyer, writer, commentator Stein got his start as a speechwriter for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. But he’s probably best known as a comedian and actor (who can forget his hilarious, deadpan performance in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”?).
But above all, he’s been heralded as “An apostle of life.”
“To be outspoken in defending life requires courage as well as common sense,” said Donald DeMarco, Senior Fellow of Human Life International.
“Ben Stein not only has the courage to stand up against Hollywood, but the common sense to express in plain terms the values that are most fundamental to society.”
Janine Turner:
Actress Turner has an extensive film career and is probably best known for her TV roles in “Northern Exposure” and “Friday Night Lights,” but also champions conservative causes — including the right to life.
“If the federal government is going to fund an entity that is pro-abortion, then it should equally fund an entity that is pro-life,” she said. “In a Republic there must be freedom to seek the truth. Where is the justice for the unborn child?”
She also extended her activism to her acting, and accepted a role in the 2018 film, “Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer.”
It depicted abortion provider Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted of killing three fetuses and the involuntary manslaughter of a woman who died during an abortion.
