Disgraced Baltimore Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby Seeks Presidential Pardon

In a last-ditch effort to avoid imprisonment, Baltimore’s former top prosecutor Marilyn Mosby has applied for a presidential pardon ahead of her sentencing next week on perjury and mortgage fraud convictions, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Lending support to Mosby’s cause, the Congressional Black Caucus penned a letter to President Joe Biden on Thursday, echoing claims made by the disgraced prosecutor and her legal team that the prosecution was politically motivated.

Mosby, once a rising star lauded for her progressive policies, is staring down a potential 20-month prison sentence recommended by prosecutors, while she has requested probation. “As a nation that leads by example, our justice system must not be weaponized to prevent progress toward a more perfect union,” wrote Rep. Steven Horsford, the Nevada Democrat who chairs the caucus.

The letter reveals that Mosby submitted her pardon application on Wednesday, coming on the heels of her recent MSNBC appearance where she argued her case to the public.

Mosby’s fall from grace was precipitated by federal criminal charges alleging that she falsely claimed a pandemic-related hardship to make early withdrawals from her retirement account, using that money for down payments on Florida properties while repeatedly lying on mortgage applications.

Despite her claims of innocence, with her pardon application stating, “No such remorse and regret is appropriate in this case,” a federal jury found Mosby guilty after a tenure marred by controversy, including her divisive prosecution of police officers in the Freddie Gray case which yielded no convictions.

Ousted by voters in 2022 after being indicted, Mosby now clings to the faint hope of a presidential pardon as her last recourse to avoid incarceration.
