New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s visit to pay respects to slain New York City Police officer Jonathan Diller took an unexpected turn Friday, marked by a brief but tense encounter with another attendee, the New York Post reported.

Hochul’s presence at the Massapequa Funeral Home on Long Island for the second day of viewings was marred by a confrontation captured on video.

Witnesses observed a clash between Hochul and a man in a black suit, prompting a response from law enforcement personnel outside the venue, who applauded as the individual departed, the Post reported.

The incident adds another layer of scrutiny to Hochul and other New York lawmakers, who have faced criticism in the aftermath of Diller’s death.

Before the weekend services, Vincent J. Vallelong, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, penned a letter cautioning City Council members against attending.

The scrutiny stems from revelations that one of the individuals implicated in the fatal shooting had been released on bail related to a gun charge last spring, sparking renewed debates over bail reform.

Diller, 31, was killed Monday during a routine traffic stop. The confrontation turned deadly when suspect Guy Rivera allegedly opened fire on Diller after the officer approached the vehicle Rivera occupied, which was parked in front of a bus stop.

Diller sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the stomach, just below his bulletproof vest. Despite efforts to save him, the married father of a 1-year-old son was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

In the exchange of gunfire, Rivera was injured by Diller’s partnert. Rivera, who has 21 prior arrests, had a weapon concealed tucked away during the altercation, according to the Post.

Lindy Jones, who was behind the wheel of Rivera’s car during the incident, was arrested after authorities found a second firearm in the vehicle.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams seized upon the tragedy to renew calls for legislative action in Albany to address issues of criminal recidivism. The shooting, involving suspects with extensive criminal histories, has reignited debate surrounding public safety and criminal justice reform.
