WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said Friday morning that he had canceled a “previously expected second wave of attacks” on Venezuela due to the country cooperating with the U.S.
The announcement on Truth Social comes nearly a week after he ordered military forces to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in a surprise nighttime raid.
Trump applauded Venezuela for “releasing large numbers of political prisoners as a sign of ‘Seeking Peace,'” adding, “This is a very important and smart gesture.”
Venezuela began releasing high-profile opposition figures, activists and journalists on Thursday in what the government described as a gesture to “seek peace.”
Trump added that the two countries are working well together, “especially as it pertains to rebuilding, in a much bigger, better, and more modern form, their oil and gas infrastructure.”
“Because of this cooperation, I have cancelled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks, which looks like it will not be needed, however, all ships will stay in place for safety and security purposes,” the president said.
Following the capture of Maduro, Trump said the U.S. would “run” Venezuela until “a safe, proper, and judicious” transition can be made.
Trump praised acting President Delcy Rodríguez during an interview on Fox News, saying: “they’ve been great. … Everything we’ve wanted, they’ve given us.”
A handful of Republicans joined Democrats on Thursday and voted to advance a war powers resolution, limiting Trump’s ability to conduct further attacks against Venezuela without congressional approval.
