The Trump administration stated Friday that it had begun reviewing refugee status of residents in Minnesota.

The news comes days after the shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services said the agency conducted “a sweeping initiative reexamining thousands of refugee cases through new background checks and intensive verification of refugee claims,” according to The Hill newspaper.

Last year, the administration said they would “reinterview” hundreds of thousands of refugees that came into the U.S. under the Biden administration.

Minnesota made headlines this week after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good during an immigration crackdown in the state.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said that Good was shot and killed after she allegedly tried to run over law enforcement with her car.

The FBI is leading an investigation into what happened. President Donald Trump openly sided with the ICE agent while other elected officials like Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar blamed ICE.

Minnesota was also in the news last month after YouTuber Nick Shirley posted a video on X where he went to multiple daycare centers that appeared vacant.

He alleged millions of taxpayer dollars were funding rampant fraud, specifically at daycare centers run by Somalis.
