COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The ex-husband of the woman who, along with her current husband, was shot dead last month has been charged in the killings.
Michael David McKee is now in custody in Illinois.
He’s accused of shooting and killing Spencer and Monique Tepe in their Weinland Park home on Dec. 30. Their family members confirmed to ABC 6 on Saturday that McKee is Monique Tepe’s ex-husband.
According to court documents, McKee has been charged on two counts of murder “in the deaths of Spencer and Monique Tepe,” the documents said.
The Columbus Police Homicide Unit identified a suspect vehicle through neighborhood surveillance. The vehicle was found in Rockford, Ill., with evidence linking McKee to it following the homicides.
Columbus police officers discovered the Tepes in their home on North Fourth Street on Dec. 30 after responding to a wellness check for Spencer Tepe, who failed to show up for work at his dentistry practice in Athens.
The Tepes’ children, ages 4 and 1, were found unharmed inside the home.
Spencer, a dentist, and Monique, a stay-at-home mom, were described as loving parents to their two young children. ABC 6 reported Friday that a private memorial service is scheduled to take place Sunday.
Rob Misleh, Spencer Tepe’s brother-in-law, just released a family statement to ABC 6, reading:
“Today’s arrest represents an important step toward justice for Monique and Spencer. Nothing can undo the devastating loss of two lives taken too soon, but we are grateful to the City of Columbus Police Department, its investigators, and assisting law enforcement community whose tireless efforts helped to capture the person involved.
We thank the community for the continued support, prayers, and compassion shown throughout this tragedy. As the case proceeds, we trust the justice system to hold the person responsible fully accountable.
Monique and Spencer remain at the center of our hearts, and we carry forward their love as we surround and protect the two children they leave behind. We will continue to honor their lives and the light they brought into this world.”
McKee will be extradited on Monday afternoon, Winnebago County authorities said.
