WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said his administration plans to stop payments to cities and states with sanctuary policies beginning Feb. 1.
Trump made the announcement during a speech at the Detroit Economic Club.
“Starting Feb. 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens,” Trump said.
“And it breeds fraud and crime and all the other problems that come. So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary,” Trump added.
In his speech, Trump also brought up fraud claims in Minnesota, which are tied to child care centers.
“We have also suspended payments tied to suspected scammers in Minnesota, of which there are many,” Trump said.
The Trump administration blocked childcare funding to five states, including Minnesota. However, a judge blocked the funding halt while the arguments continue to play out in court.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has been cracking down on so-called sanctuary jurisdictions. Over the summer, the Department of Homeland Security released a list of over 500 areas that do not comply with federal law.
The Justice Department has filed multiple lawsuits against cities that have “sanctuary policies.” The DOJ has taken legal action against several cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City, Paterson, New Jersey and Rochester, New York. They have also filed suit against states including Illinois, Colorado and New York.
