Trump confirms Putin invited to join Gaza ‘Board of Peace’

Russian President Vladimir Putin is among the world leaders invited to join President Donald Trump’s Gaza “Board of Peace” to help implement the U.S.-brokered 20-point peace plan between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

“Putin received an invitation through diplomatic channels to join the Peace Council,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state-run news outlet RIA Novosti. “We are studying all the details of this proposal, including hoping to contact the American side to clarify all the nuances.”

Trump confirmed to reporters on Monday that Putin has been invited to join the board.

The initiative calls for establishing an oversight body for Gaza’s reconstruction and transitional governance, chaired by Trump, intended to support a technocratic Palestinian administration until authority is transferred to the Palestinian Authority.

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced earlier this month that the second phase of the peace plan would begin with disarming Hamas, rebuilding the war-ravaged territory and establishing the group of Palestinian experts that will administer daily affairs in Gaza under American supervision.

A founding Executive Board for the “Board of Peace” includes:

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio
  • U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff
  • Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner
  • Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair
  • Billionaire businessman Marc Rowan
  • President of the World Bank Ajay Banja
  • U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel

The United Kingdom, Canada, Egypt, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, and India are among the countries invited to participate in the Board of Peace for Gaza, established under Trump’s broader Board of Peace initiative.

A U.S. official confirmed to CNN that members will receive a permanent seat if they are willing to pay $1 billion, but otherwise will only have a three-year term. All funds will go toward rebuilding the Gaza Strip, which was destroyed under Israeli bombing following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas.

French President Emmanuel Macron rejected Trump’s offer to join the “Board of Peace,” noting the board’s charter “goes beyond the framework of Gaza and raises serious questions, in particular with respect to the principles and structure of the United Nations, which cannot be called into question.”

Trump threatened on Monday to raise wine and Champagne tariffs to 200% if Macron doesn’t join.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said it will join but won’t pay for a permanent seat.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a statement on Saturday opposing the Gaza Executive Board because it “was not coordinated with Israel and runs contrary to its policy.”

“The Prime Minister has instructed the Foreign Affairs Minister to contact the US Secretary of State on this matter,” the statement read.

The U.S. is expected to announce its official list of members during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
