Trump threatens 200% tariff on French wine to pressure Macron into peace board

President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne to pressure President Emmanuel Macron into joining the “Board of Peace.”

Macron rejected Trump’s invitation to be on the “most prestigious board” created to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza and help fulfill all 20 points of the President’s plan to stop the war between Israel and Hamas.

“I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join, but he doesn’t have to join,” Trump told reporters in Miami while also saying, “nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon.”

In his rejection, Macron noted the board’s charter “goes beyond the framework of Gaza and raises serious questions, in particular with respect to the principles and structure of the United Nations, which cannot be called into question.”

The threat comes after Trump already imposed a 10% import tariff on all products from the European country and seven others for opposing his push to take over Greenland.

Reports suggest Trump has invited 60 nations to join the “Board of Peace” and remain a permanent member for a $1 billion contribution.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will serve on the executive board to help with “stabilization of daily life in Gaza, while laying the foundation for long-term, self-sustaining governance,” according to the White House.

Witkoff announced earlier this month that the second phase of the peace plan had already begun with a goal to disarm Hamas, rebuild the war-ravaged territory and establish a group of Palestinian experts that will administer daily affairs in Gaza under American supervision.

He added that the U.S. expects Hamas to “comply fully with its obligations, including the immediate return of the final deceased hostage” and “failure to do so will bring serious consequences.”
