President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that the U.S. would no longer help Iraq if the country reinstates former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

“I’m hearing that the Great Country of Iraq might make a very bad choice by reinstalling Nouri al-Maliki as Prime Minister,” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.

“Last time Maliki was in power, the Country descended into poverty and total chaos. That should not be allowed to happen again.”

Trump said that Iraq wouldn’t succeed or be prosperous without help from the U.S.

“Because of his insane policies and ideologies, if elected, the United States of America will no longer help Iraq and, if we are not there to help, Iraq has ZERO chance of Success, Prosperity, or Freedom,” Trump’s post concluded.

“MAKE IRAQ GREAT AGAIN!”

Earlier this month, the alliance of Shi’ite political blocs picked al-Maliki for prime minister.

This move will likely lead to negotiations for a new government and will impact the relationship between the U.S. and Iran, according to Reuters.

The Coordination Framework, which is a political ally to the Shi’ites, said that al-Maliki was picked for prime minister “based on his political and administrative experience and his role in managing the state.”

He served two terms as the Iraqi prime minister from 2006 to 2014.
