On Wednesday, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is offering free rides on Local Bus, Light Rail, Metro Subway, MARC Train, Commuter Bus and Mobility services to celebrate Transit Equity Day and to honor Rosa Parks on her birthday.

The annual celebration is dedicated to the civil rights leader’s role in America’s civil rights movement and equity in public transportation, according to officials.

“Equitable, accessible and safe public transit is what our riders can expect from the Maryland Department of Transportation every day,” Maryland Transportation Acting Secretary Katie Thomson said, via a press release. “On Transit Equity Day, we recognize the vital work Rosa Parks started and continue to make transit more affordable, inclusive and sustainable in her honor.”

Back on Dec. 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks made history when she defied local law and refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated public transit bus. Parks’ arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and legal challenges to segregation law, according to authorities. In November of 1956, the Supreme Court ruled segregation on public buses was unconstitutional.

“Transit connects riders to opportunity and drives our regional economy forward,” Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold said, via a press release.

This is an excellent opportunity for more individuals to experience how easy, safe, and convenient taking transit can be.”

MTA also encourages riders to use their free ride on Feb. 4 to travel anywhere and everywhere they want to go.
