HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman on Tuesday questioned Republican support for Texas GOP Senator John Cornyn’s reelection campaign.
He suggested in a Fox News interview that President Donald Trump and other Republicans haven’t backed the incumbent, whom Fetterman called “reasonable,” as much as they can. Cornyn is competing against state Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has been involved in several scandals, for the Senate Republican nomination.
“That would be money in the bank, but now – I don’t know why, politically, I’m not sure why the Republicans and the president wouldn’t sit on that and just lock down Texas,” Fetterman said.
Trump has not made an endorsement in the primary race, which also includes Representative Wesley Hunt. The president told reporters on Monday that the election “has a ways to go,” but it will take place in less than two weeks.
“John is a good – I like all three of ’em, actually. I like all three,” Trump said.
“Those are the toughest races. They’ve all supported me, they’re all good, and you’re supposed to pick one, so we’ll see what happens. But I support all three.”
A poll conducted by Emerson College last month found Paxton leading Cornyn by a one-point margin and ahead of Hunt, although no candidate was near the majority threshold to avoid a runoff. The survey also shows Cornyn performing better against his potential Democratic opponents, U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett and state Representative James Talarico, than Paxton.
Cornyn said in a recent interview that it would be very helpful of Trump to endorse him. Nobody but the president knows whether that will happen, though, the senator added.
“I’m an ally of the president, so I think he appreciates that. But I also understand his reluctance in getting involved in a three-way primary, where he at best will alienate some of his other supporters,” Cornyn said. “And so, I think he wants to see me earn this nomination, and we’re in the process of doing that right now.”
Paxton has often shared Trump’s compliments of him and released a campaign ad last week featuring the president’s praise.
“’BRAVE. STRONG. TREMENDOUS GUY.’ That’s how President Trump describes me,” Cornyn said in a social media post announcing the ad.
“This is a positive campaign about the facts and the results. I’ll do the same in the U.S. Senate,” he added.
Paxton has often attacked his Republican opponents, however, calling Cornyn selfish and historically unpopular in an X post on Wednesday.
