Gov. Wes Moore said he will attend governors breakfast at White House

President Donald Trump is hosting governors, including Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, from across the country on Friday for a bipartisan working breakfast.

The National Governors Association (NGA) meets annually with the president during its conference in Washington, D.C.

Originally, Trump deemed Gov. Moore and Gov. Gov. Jared Polis “not worthy” of attendance.

Moore said that being excluded from the event carries added weight because he is the nation’s only Black governor — whether or not that was the intent behind the decision.

“As the nation’s only Black governor, I can’t ignore that being singled out for exclusion from this bipartisan tradition carries an added weight — whether that was the intent or not,” he wrote on X.

On Friday, Moore said that he would be attending the Friday business meeting at the White House.

He released the following statement:

The National Governors Association exists to bring together the nation’s governors, Republicans and Democrats alike, to solve problems and move our states forward. I am proud to have been elected by my peers to serve as Vice Chair.

There is nothing that I will not do and no partnership that I will not build if it means we can improve the lives of Marylanders. In fact, just a few weeks ago, I led a bipartisan group of governors to the White House to address energy costs and grid reliability – securing a cap on prices and saving families an additional $27 billion on their energy bills.

A week ago, the president broke a decades-long, bipartisan tradition and inexplicably disinvited me from the dinner on Saturday night. I thank all of my Democratic colleagues for standing with me.

I remain ready and willing to find common ground, produce results for the people of Maryland, and fight to ensure my fellow governors can do the same for the people they represent.

I will attend today’s business meeting with my colleagues at the White House. But let me be abundantly clear: I will not participate in political stunts. Americans are exhausted by the division and toxicity out of Washington, and we all pray for better. In that spirit, I look forward to clearly laying out what Marylanders and Americans need and hope to find a White House committed to delivering just that.

The breakfast began with President Trump delivering a few statements before asking the media to leave.

“The media – thank you. You can leave now,” Trump said.
