Trump orders federal agencies to stop using Anthropic technology

President Donald Trump said he is ordering all federal agencies to stop using AI tech company Anthropic’s technology.

“I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology,” his post read.

The order follows the company’s dispute with the Pentagon over artificial intelligence safety.

Trump’s comments also came just over an hour before the Pentagon’s deadline for Anthropic to allow unrestricted military use of AI technology.

On Thursday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said his company “cannot in good conscience accede” to the Defense Department’s demands.

Trump wrote that most agencies must immediately stop using Anthropic’s AI. He gave the Pentagon a six-month period to phase out Anthropic technology that is already embedded in military platforms.

“We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!” Trump wrote.

The issue between the Pentagon and Anthroic lay over AI’s role in national security and concerns how increasingly capable machines could be used in situations involving lethal force, sensitive information or government surveillance.

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s top spokesman, posted on social media that the military “has no interest in using AI to conduct mass surveillance of Americans (which is illegal) nor do we want to use AI to develop autonomous weapons that operate without human involvement.”
