The most anticipated countdown in the Nation’s Capital officially begins today.

Thursday morning at The Mayflower Hotel in D.C., city leaders and National Park Service (NPS) officials will gather for the 2026 National Cherry Blossom Festival Kick-off.

The event serves as the formal opening of the spring season, headlined by the NPS’s official prediction for when the 3,700+ cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin will reach “peak bloom.”

The “peak” of anticipation

For Washingtonians and the millions of tourists planning their spring travel, “peak bloom,” defined as the day when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open, is the season’s gold standard.
