WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said the war in Iran could be almost over, he said in a phone interview with CBS News.
“I think the war is very complete, pretty much,” the president said from Doral, Florida. “[Iran has] no navy, no communications, they’ve got no air force. Their missiles are down to a scatter. Their drones are being blown up all over the place, including their manufacturing of drones.”
During remarks in Doral at the Republican Issues Conference, Trump described the war as a “short-term excursion,” intending to get rid of “evil.”
“Our country is doing really well. We took a little excursion because we felt we had to do that to get rid of some evil. I think you’ll see it’s going to be a short-term excursion. How good is our military, right?… Short-term,” Trump said during the remarks.
When asked about reports of potential U.S. boots on the ground in Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran forces are capable of taking on U.S. soldiers.
“We have very brave soldiers who are waiting for any enemy who enters into our soil to fight with them and to kill them and destroy them,” Araghchi said.
In the phone interview with CBS, Trump also hinted at a takeover of the Strait of Hormuz, which controls a major portion of the global oil supply. He told CBS he was “thinking about taking it over.”
When asked about high oil prices, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said prices did not contribute to limiting military operations.
“The president’s also been clear that hey, he’s prepared to see this through – mitigating that – but also not allowing that to be a limiting factor,” Hegseth said.
Seven U.S. soldiers were killed while supporting the military efforts.
After U.S. strikes killed Iran’s supreme leader, the country appointed Ayatollah Ali Khaminei’s son as the next in charge, installing another hardline figure to run the country. A recently compiled classified assessment from the National Intelligence Council finds that the U.S. military strikes that decimated the country would not be able to topple the regime.
