A BB gun was confiscated from a student’s backpack at Timonium Elementary School on Tuesday morning after another student alerted a teacher, according to a letter sent to families.

The incident occurred on March 10 during student arrival.

A child reportedly told a friend they had brought a BB gun — described as a recent birthday gift — for show and tell.

The friend informed a teacher, who immediately notified school administrators.

According to the letter, the student was escorted to the main office, where the BB gun was recovered from the backpack.

School officials, working with the district’s safety manager, conducted an investigation and confirmed that the BB gun was never removed from the backpack while inside the building.

“Possession of any weapon on school property is a serious offense,” Principal Laura Brown wrote in her message to parents and guardians.

She added that the student involved will face disciplinary action in accordance with the school’s student handbook and policy.

Administrators emphasized that there was no immediate threat to students or staff and credited the reporting student for coming forward. “The information that was shared ensured that we could take immediate steps to investigate and ensure the safety of all Timonium students and staff,” Brown said.

Following the incident, the school counselor met with all third grade students and remains available to provide additional support for any students who may feel upset or anxious.

In her letter, Brown reminded families that weapons of any kind — including toy weapons — are strictly prohibited on school property. She also encouraged parents and students to report anything suspicious or concerning to school staff or police.

“We all have a role to play in ensuring that our school remains a safe and secure learning environment for our children,” Brown wrote.

School officials said maintaining student and staff safety remains their top priority.

Parents with questions are encouraged to contact the school directly.
