HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Senator John Cornyn, the Texas Republican, denied Wednesday that he flipped his position on eliminating the filibuster to earn President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
An NBC News reporter asked him what he would say to people who think he changed his mind on altering the Senate rules, which require 60 votes to pass most legislation, to appease Trump. The president has demanded the Senate scrap the filibuster, previously to Cornyn’s objection.
“I’d say that’s not true,” the lawmaker, who is running in a competitive Senate primary race, said.
Cornyn wrote in an op-ed on Wednesday that he would change the rules to pass a voting bill wanted by Trump. Democrats have previously and will try again to eliminate the filibuster, Cornyn claimed, so Republicans might as well do it now.
“We can let the Democrats keep obstructing today and then smash the rules the first chance they get, or we can act now and use the mandate the American people gave this president and this Congress to secure our elections, protect our homeland and bring back common sense,” the senator wrote.
Democrats have not committed to changing the rules if they win back the majority.
