A state shark? Maryland mulls becoming the first to have one

With testimony filled with shark-themed puns and chuckles from everyone in the room, Del. Todd Morgan, a Republican, advocated to finally have the Otodus megalodon designated as Maryland’s state shark during a hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Known for its massive size, the megalodon roamed Maryland waterways millions of years ago. Its fossilized teeth can still be found throughout the state.

If approved, Maryland would be the first in the U.S. to name a state shark.

“This is one of the most highly anticipated bills of this session,” Morgan said. “The megalodon is getting national attention. If we don’t act now, the dream will drift into extinction, just as Meg did.”
