Mount Airy man arrested after impersonating police officer on I-695

Maryland State Police have arrested a Mount Airy man accused of impersonating a police officer and attempting to pull over another driver on Interstate 695 Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities identified the suspect as 59-year-old Eric Baummer.

On May 5, around 4:40 p.m., troopers received a 911 call from a motorist who reported that a driver in a Ford Explorer was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on him along the outer loop of I-695 near Washington Boulevard.

Investigators say the driver activated blue and white flashing lights, prompting concern from the motorist, who chose not to pull over and instead contacted emergency services.

According to a preliminary investigation, Baummer then drove past the caller, changed lanes, and positioned his vehicle in front of the motorist before exiting the highway at Hollins Ferry Road.

Baummer was the sole occupant of the black 2014 Ford Explorer involved in the incident.

The caller—later identified as an off-duty military law enforcement officer—remained on the phone with dispatchers while following the suspect to a gas station in the 4300 block of Hollins Ferry Road in Lansdowne.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barrack, along with officers from the Baltimore County Police Department, responded to the location and made contact with Baummer.

He was taken into custody at the scene without incident and charged with impersonating a police officer, according to state police.
