Ocean City warns of flooding, high winds as high tides prompt road closures

OCEAN CITY, Md. (WBFF) — Flooding and high winds prompted a travel advisory Saturday in Ocean City, where police warned that persistent onshore winds and elevated water levels could lead to more significant flooding than tide levels alone would suggest.

The Ocean City Police Department said Saturday, Sept. 26, that this morning’s high tide led to road closures in low-lying areas, and additional flooding is expected with tonight’s high tide.

Police said flooding is expected to take several hours to recede after high tide because of ongoing storm conditions.

Tonight’s high tide is expected around 7:25 p.m. on the ocean side and about 7:50 p.m. on the bayside, police said.

Police urged drivers to avoid flooded roadways. “DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATER!” the department said, warning that if drivers cannot clearly see the roadway beneath the water, they should not attempt to drive through it.

Vehicles can become disabled or stranded in what may appear to be shallow water, creating a dangerous situation for motorists and first responders.

For those traveling through downtown Ocean City, police advised using an alternate route when possible and avoiding known flood-prone areas, particularly around high tide.

Police also urged people to allow extra time, check road conditions before leaving, and follow posted closures and directions from public safety personnel.

“Know your route. Turn around, don’t drown. Stay safe,” the department said.
