What Americans Need to Know About the ‘Suspected’ Plague in Russia

The concerns about “suspected pneumonic plague” in Russia have made their way to the Trump administration, as news about a lab worker’s death has gone viral over the weekend.

An Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute employee in Russia died of an unknown type of pneumonia, resulting in the quarantine of a hospital and a couple hundred being watched medically over concerns that it is plague, according to NBC News.

In a statement from a State Department spokesman to Townhall, the department said that with many facts not yet known, they “encourage Russian authorities to share accurate information quickly and openly.”

“Plague is a known disease and is treatable with common antibiotics, especially when treatment starts early,” the spokesman added. “Cases occur naturally in many parts of the world.”

The department also emphasized that Americans visiting abroad should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to get updated on information, and noted that Russia is at a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” for U.S. citizens.

Emily Hilliard, press secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement that the “CDC is monitoring the situation closely with the State Department and our other interagency partners. The safety and security of U.S. citizens is our highest priority.”

President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that “we’re looking at it very strongly. We just heard about it.” The president noted that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have not discussed the subject.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the government is keeping tabs on the situation, but he noted how there’s been almost no travel between the U.S. and Russia, as the Russia-Ukraine War has been ongoing since 2022.

“There’s very limited travel between the U.S. and Russia, obviously,” Rubio said. “But like anything else, something like that gets out and can quickly spread.”

“So we’re watching and monitoring it closely. I don’t think it’s cause for alarm, but it is cause for focus and cause to just keep an eye on it,” he added.
