In a stunning display of fiscal insanity, Maryland Democrats are ramming through a radical reparations bill despite the state’s catastrophic $3.3 billion budget deficit that’s projected to explode to a mind-boggling $6.7 billion by 2028.
Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready didn’t mince words about this leftist pet project: “We don’t have the money right now to be exploring these options, period,” he declared. “The issue of reparations elicits strong opinions, but it’s flat-out financially impossible, regardless of your ideological fantasies.”
This socialist wealth redistribution scheme, a crown jewel of the Legislative Black Caucus agenda, was rushed through the Senate with barely any scrutiny. The Democrats’ eagerness to throw away taxpayer dollars on historical grievance politics while the state’s finances collapse is nothing short of governmental malpractice.
Ready exposed the fundamental absurdity of the entire concept: “I question whether using taxpayer money would ever be appropriate in this context. Even Holocaust reparations targeted the actual companies involved, not innocent taxpayers generations removed from any wrongdoing.”
Following the disastrous example of failing blue states like California – where unhinged bureaucrats recommended astronomical payouts of $1.2 MILLION per person – Maryland seems determined to join the ranks of fiscally ruined progressive utopias.
Meanwhile, the ambitious Governor Wes Moore, clearly eyeing bigger political prizes, pathetically dodges every direct question about this budget-busting proposal. When confronted about reparations, Moore scrambled to change the subject: “Nah, we are going to work with the Maryland General Assembly on a whole collection of different issues.”
The truth about Moore’s priorities became painfully obvious when he showed up at Baltimore’s Pickles Pub during the Orioles’ opener. Regular Marylanders greeted him with a chorus of boos, with one fed-up citizen shouting, “Lower my taxes!” Moore’s empty response – “You’re getting a tax cut this year. You got my word” – reeked of desperate political pandering as he simultaneously refuses to kill this taxpayer heist.
After fleeing through the kitchen to avoid tough questions from reporters, Moore’s office issued a pathetic non-response filled with meaningless political jargon.
Local resident Billy White called out Moore’s transparent political calculations: “The governor is more worried about being popular with other people around the country and trying to do something with the White House than the people of Maryland,” he observed.
Senator Ready hit the nail on the head: “I don’t think Gov. Moore would want this on his desk because it’s a distraction from real problems. There may be some fringe radicals it motivates, but most Marylanders just want fiscal sanity.”
The $54,500 annual price tag for this commission is just the tip of the iceberg – a classic bait-and-switch that hides the billions that would inevitably follow any reparations program. This commission would strategically delay its recommendations until 2027, conveniently after upcoming elections when voters can hold politicians accountable.
Despite Maryland families struggling with inflation, high taxes, and economic uncertainty, the Democrat-controlled legislature remains fixated on divisive identity politics rather than fiscal responsibility. The bill is expected to sail through the House before April 7, proving once again that leftist virtue signaling trumps sound governance in today’s Maryland.
