Ride-Share Driver Carjacked in Baltimore, Suspect Arrested

A 20-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly assaulting and carjacking a ride-share driver in Baltimore. The incident occurred around 2:41 a.m. on January 6 in the 2400 block of West North Avenue.

According to police, the 31-year-old driver was forced to flee his vehicle during an assault by a passenger. Officers quickly located the stolen vehicle in the 1700 block of Presbury Street and apprehended the suspect after a brief foot chase. The suspect was taken to Central Booking for processing.

This incident follows Baltimore’s ongoing efforts to combat carjackings, particularly those involving juvenile offenders. In 2022, the city reported at least 85 carjackings committed by youth between ages 10 and 17. Recent cases include a December 22 incident involving a 9-year-old and four others, and a December 30 carjacking resulting in the arrest of three teens and two adults.

The city’s approach to juvenile crime has evolved with the 2024 Juvenile Reform Act, which allows for charging children aged 10-12 with specific offenses including auto theft and gun possession. The legislation also increased transparency in juvenile cases.

Baltimore reported an overall decrease in violent crime in 2024, including a 34% reduction in non-fatal shootings compared to 2023.
