A 2 year old child is in surgery after being shot in the head Christmas morning at a home in Walker County, according to the sheriff.

Deputies were called to a residence on Tarvin Road in Rock Spring around 9:50 a.m., according to a release from Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson.

When deputies and EMS arrived, they found the toddler with a gunshot wound to the head.

The child was rushed to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, and is currently in surgery, the sheriff said.

Sheriff Wilson says the child’s father and an infant sibling were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

He says the father was tending to the infant when the shooting happened.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office says the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case. The Walker County Department of Family and Children’s Services is also involved.

“ We all grieve when a child is injured or dies; however, for this tragedy to happen on Christmas morning the emotions are magnified,” Sheriff Wilson said.
