Two people are dead following a violent series of events Sunday afternoon on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County that ended with an officer-involved shooting, according to Virginia State Police.

The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. on March 1 along I-495 at Exit 42.

Police said a state trooper was dispatched at around 1:17 p.m. for reports of a road rage incident. When the trooper arrived, he came across a man wielding a knife.

Authorities said the trooper, who was not hurt, fired his weapon in self-defense and struck the man, who was later taken to a nearby hospital. He ultimately died from his injuries.

Four stabbing victims were counted by troopers at the scene, officials said. A 39-year-old woman later died from her injuries. A dog that was also stabbed died at the scene.

Three more people were taken to a hospital close-by for medical treatment.

State police believe the stabbings may have happened following a crash on southbound I-495. The crash remains under investigation.

VSP officials said the incident is not believed to be terrorism-related. The agency’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Fairfax Field Office, is also investigating the incident.

Traffic alert officials said the trapped queue of vehicles has not been cleared. However, all southbound lanes between Gallows Road and Little River Turnpike (Route 236) were closed.

Traffic was detoured at Exit 50A onto Route 29/Route 50. Drivers were urged to follow posted detours or seek other routes as delays persisted.

The investigation is still ongoing.
