The Piper PA-28 crashed on Saturday around 11:39 p.m., according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The agency said an investigator is out at the crash site, documenting the scene and examining the plane. Once that is complete, the plane will be transported to a facility for further evaluation.

The investigation is centered on the pilot, the plane and the environment the craft was flying in, according to the NTSB.

Prior to the crash, the plane took off from Ocean City, New Jersey, and was heading toward Montgomery County Airpark, according to MSP. The aircraft wound up in the woods at Archer Park, not far from a neighborhood.

“We are very fortunate that nobody else was injured in this crash,” Maryland State Police spokesperson Elena Russo said on Sunday. “Of course, it’s an absolute tragedy that we’ve lost three individuals in this incident, but we’re also very fortunate that nobody else in the neighboring residential area was hurt.”
