STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Five people are dead and dozens are injured after a multi-vehicle crash early Friday morning on Interstate 95 southbound in Stafford County.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the crash happened near mile marker 146, about two miles south of Exit 148 for Quantico.
The crash happened around 2:35 a.m., where traffic was slowing ahead of an upcoming work zone, according to Virginia State Police.
State police said a bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles.

As of 4 a.m., officials said all southbound lanes are closed as crews respond to the scene. VDOT said the closure is expected to last for an extended period of time on Friday morning.

Officials confirmed five fatalities among the occupants of the vehicles struck by the bus. In addition, 34 people were taken to area hospitals. Three of those people are reported to have critical injuries.
Travelers heading south are asked to take alternate routes to avoid delays. Commuters can take Route 301 to the east or Route 29 to the west as possible detours around the I-95 corridor.
