Gas prices are climbing quickly across the region just as Spring Break travel ramps up, with AAA warning drivers to brace for higher costs and focus on steps that can stretch every gallon.

As drivers, we can’t control the global fuel market but we can control how efficiently we use every gallon,” said Ragina Ali, public and government affairs manager for AAA in Maryland and Washington, D.C. “Additionally, there is uncertainty about how high prices will go and how long they will stay high, but there are simple actions drivers can take to improve their gas mileage and save money at the pumps.

AAA urges drivers to stay on top of maintenance, fix “Check Engine” lights promptly and keep tires properly inflated. On the road, the group recommends driving the speed limit, avoiding hard acceleration and excessive idling, using cruise control when appropriate and limiting air conditioning use to improve fuel economy.

AAA also says premium fuel offers no added benefit unless required by the manufacturer.

To save money, AAA encourages drivers to compare gas prices using tools like the AAA mobile app and take advantage of discounts, including savings at Shell for members enrolled in Fuel Rewards.

In its Spring Break outlook, AAA reports domestic roundtrip flights are averaging $815, up about 2% from last year. Florida destinations — including Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa — top the list. Orlando, Los Angeles and Phoenix are the most popular rental car pickup cities.

Internationally, average roundtrip fares are about $1,300, slightly lower than last year. Caribbean cruises remain in high demand, while Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, London and Barcelona lead European travel, with Rome the top tour package destination.
