Several animals were found neglected in a Charles County, Maryland, home in early July after deputies were called to an alleged assault by the homeowner, according to Charles County Sheriff’s office officials.

Deputies and county animal control officers found an alligator, caiman, snake, emu, dogs, cats, and pigs, among others, and six handguns inside a residence at the 10000 block of Penjack Place in Waldorf on July 3. Sir Leander Evans Gamble, 57, was arrested during the incident.

Officers responded to the Penjack Place residence at around 12:30 p.m. after officials said he allegedly confronted and assaulted three people renting a trailer on his property. At some point, Gamble grabbed a handgun from his residence, pointed it at the victims, and threatened to harm them.

Gamble was detained on scene, and it was while officers were carrying out a search warrant in his home that they found the animals, many of them neglected, according to officials.

Gamble was accused of felony aggravated assault and three misdemeanor second-degree assault charges, and is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. Officials said more charges are pending and an investigation is ongoing.

Online court records list three peace orders filed on July 5 against a person with the same name and date of birth as Gamble.
