Annapolis man to hold 4,000-mile bike ride fundraiser after wife’s ALS diagnosis

An Annapolis man has planned a cross-country bike ride to fundraise for research into his wife’s terminal illness.

When Laura Olds was diagnosed in 2023 with ALS, the news was devastating for her friends and family. The nervous system disease leads to progressive muscle weakness. There is no known cure for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“It’s so sad and unlucky,” said Todd Olds, Laura Olds’ husband. “She was super healthy her whole life. [She did] yoga, exercising, taking care of herself and didn’t eat poorly. So, it was a shock.”

Last year, Todd Olds and his longtime friends, Rex Houlihan and Scott Alyn, were at Sailor Oyster Bar in Annapolis when they got the idea for Coast2Coast4ALS, a cross-country bike ride to raise funds for ALS research and care.
