Arson confirmed in Sykesville at 2 Springfield Hospital buildings

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office has confirmed that fires Saturday morning at two buildings in Sykesville’s Springfield Hospital Center were acts of arson.

The historic hospital site was first established in 1896, and the men’s group buildings — where the fires were set — were completed in 1898. The building that suffered the most damage was the administration building in the men’s group.

Both buildings involved in the blazes were vacant and not in current use. No injuries were reported as a result of the fires. Firefighters spent about four hours putting out the blazes Saturday.

Springfield is owned and operated by the State of Maryland as a regional psychiatric hospital. Most of the buildings on the campus aren’t operational, but three are in active use for “long-term inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults,” many involved in legal proceedings or referred by hospitals.
