Court records reveal that a 37-year-old man shot his mother during an altercation at her home in northeast Baltimore in January.
The Baltimore Police Department announced on Feb. 23 that Gregory Stewart, 37, had been charged for allegedly shooting a 59-year-old woman in the 5400 block of Gerland Avenue on Jan. 20.
Stewart’s charging documents describe how he shot his mother inside her home during a dispute that started over his inability to work while he was intoxicated.
On that day, Stewart had arranged for his ex-girlfriend to drive him to his place of employment. When she showed up at the house, he told her that he was drunk, according to the charging documents.
Stewart was reportedly drinking a beer when he informed her that he was intoxicated. Court records state that this sparked an argument between them.
During the argument, Stewart pulled out a silver .357 snub-nosed revolver and pistol-whipped his ex-girlfriend across her face, according to the charging documents.
The physical assault prompted his ex-girlfriend to run inside his mother’s house. Investigators allege that Stewart followed her inside the house and fired his weapon twice.

“One round traveled through an interior living room wall, as well as the refrigerator in the kitchen, before stopping in an exterior wall behind the refrigerator,” court records state. “The second round struck [the victim] in the bottom of the right foot as she was attempting to flee upstairs.”
Stewart fled the area after shooting his mother. He took off in his ex-girlfriend’s “2008 Grand Marquis, which he did not have permission to take,” according to the charging documents. Police searched for Stewart but could not find him.
Eventually, investigators were able to track down Stewart and arrest him in Anne Arundel County on Jan. 22, according to authorities. Afterward, they took him to the Baltimore Central Booking & Intake Center.
Stewart has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, and theft of property greater than $1,500 but less than $25,000. Additionally, he was charged with the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, the unlawful removal of a motor vehicle, theft of greater than $100 to less than $1,500, endangering a person or place while being intoxicated, and handgun violations.
