Baltimore Reaches 200 Homicides in 2024, Community Gathers in Prayer
The Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Grief Ministry held a prayer walk Monday as Baltimore marked its 200th homicide of 2024, with 173 deaths from gun violence.
At St. Joseph’s Monastery Church, dozens gathered to read victims’ names and walk to My Brother’s Keeper. Police Commissioner Richard Worley noted most victims were young Black men under 30.
Despite 59 fewer homicides than last year, gun violence heavily impacts youth, with highest victimization among ages 30-34. The 26-29, 22-25, and 18-21 age groups each saw over 300 gun violence victims in the past year.
Dorothy Cunningham, who lost her grandson to a stray bullet in 2019, attended to support other grieving families. Community organizations like Roberta’s House provided support services.
Mayor Brandon Scott highlighted the city’s “renaissance” with a 24% reduction in homicides and 34% drop in non-fatal shootings through the Gun Violence Reduction Strategy.
