Baltimore security officers walk out in labor dispute with Abacus Corporation

Security officers across Baltimore walked off the job Thursday, mounting a one-day strike that escalated a labor dispute with contractor Abacus Corporation. Union-backed workers alleged retaliation and intimidation tied to organizing efforts — claims the company flatly denied.

Nonunion officers, supported by Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ, picketed and pointed to unfair labor practice allegations, while an Abacus official said the allegations are unproven and insisted the company “categorically denies any unlawful conduct.”

“For nearly two years officers have been pushing for a fair process, free from intimidation from Abacus and the other employers,” said 32BJ spokesperson Julie Karant. “They are on strike to because they have experienced coercion, surveillance, intimidation and retaliation around their attempts to unionize with 32BJ.”

The walkout hit posts across the city, including Harbor East, police stations, a water treatment facility and public housing developments. Officers are employed through Abacus and other firms, including Metropolitan Protective Services and Urban Development Solutions.
