BGE customers to get nearly $500,000 in natural gas bill relief through settlement

Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) customers are expected to see some relief on their natural gas bills after the utility helped secure nearly $500,000 in savings through a federal rate case settlement.

The savings stem from a multi-year dispute over proposed increases in interstate natural gas transportation costs—expenses that directly affect the supply portion of customer bills.

BGE, along with its parent company Exelon and sister utilities Delmarva Power and PECO, intervened in the case, ultimately helping to reduce costs and prevent additional charges.

In total, across three natural gas utilities, Exelon will return more than $13 million to customers through refunds and lower long-term rates.

The companies also say their efforts helped avoid more than $12 million per year in potential new costs.

The case was heard before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and involved a proposed rate hike from Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Company, a major natural gas supplier in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Exelon companies challenged the increase, leading to a settlement that includes refunds for over-collected costs and limits on future rate hikes.

BGE officials say the outcome comes at a critical time, as many households face rising energy expenses.

“Maryland families and businesses are under real pressure from high energy costs, and we take our responsibility to stand up for customers very seriously,” said Tamla Olivier, president and CEO of BGE, via press release. “While we can’t control every component of an energy bill, we can challenge unjustified cost increases and fight for fair outcomes. We’re committed to doing everything in our power to protect customers and keep energy as affordable and reliable as possible.”

Under the agreement, Transco will not seek additional base rate increases before August 31, 2027, providing some stability for customers in the coming years.

The nearly $500,000 in refunds for BGE customers will be distributed through the utility’s standard gas supply cost recovery process, meaning customers will automatically see the benefit reflected in future bills.
