Bike Groups Push for Bike Lanes on New Bay Bridge

Dozens of biking organizations in Anne Arundel County and beyond are teaming up to ask Maryland officials to include bike and pedestrian lanes in the design for the new Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The current bridge only allows cars, but the new one will have 8 to 10 car lanes. Advocates want a separate, protected lane for people walking or biking, with a barrier for safety—not just a painted line.

They believe this would connect local trails like the Broadneck Trail and Cross Island Trail, and even link into national trails like the East Coast Greenway and the American Discovery Trail. That would allow people to travel long distances without a car—and safely cross the Bay by bike.

Bike advocate Jon Korin says better access would also help people connect with nature and care more about protecting the Bay.

Right now, Maryland transportation officials are still studying options for the bridge design. A timeline hasn’t been announced, but the idea of a “shared use path” is on the table.

Local leaders, like Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley, support the idea. He says, “If you build it, people will use it.”
