The Baltimore Police Department has released body-worn camera footage from the deadly officer-involved shooting on July 5.

The shooting occurred around 1:45 a.m. in the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue, near the Walbrook Junction Shopping Center.

Authorities said that Baltimore Police’s helicopter Foxtrot located a vehicle around 1:30 a.m. that had been reported stolen during a Baltimore County carjacking.

Officers, with assistance from Foxtrot, followed the vehicle at what they described as a safe distance for about 20 minutes before it pulled over in the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue.

Officials said the driver initially opened the vehicle door as if to exit, but quickly got back inside. Officers approached and attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, but police said he locked the doors and refused to get out.

According to police, as one officer prepared to break the vehicle’s window, another officer saw what appeared to be a gun and alerted the other officers.

Officers gave several commands to the driver and that’s when multiple officers fired their weapons, striking the driver.

Police said officers immediately rendered aid. The man, identified as 42-year-old Maurice Daniels, of Millersville, was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

No officers were injured, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigation Division (IID).

Investigators recovered what police described as a replica BB gun from the vehicle.

The Maryland Attorney General announced that his office had launched an investigation roughly two hours after the shooting.

Police said all officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The involved officers were identified as:

  • Officer Charles Blackman, a six-year veteran
  • Officer David Weldon, a five-year veteran
  • Sergeant Kevin Rivera, an eight-year veteran
  • Officer Antonio Groomes, a five-year veteran
  • Officer Darrius Hicklin, a three-year veteran
  • Officer Al-Shakier Drake, an eight-month veteran

The IID continues to investigate and asks anyone with information, including cell phone or private surveillance video, is urged to call the IID at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.maryland.gov.
