BPD releases body-worn camera footage in fatal officer involved shooting

The Baltimore Police Department released the body worn camera footage of a fatal officer involved shooting that occurred in southeast Baltimore January 20.

Officials identified the deceased individual as Jamal Muse, 40, of Baltimore.

The officers involved have been identified as BPD Sergeant Carlos Arias, a 15-year veteran, and Officer Edwin Ruiz, a 3-year veteran.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at around 9:14 p.m., police responded to the 6800 block of Bank Street for a 911 call for a person being threatened by a man armed with a gun.

The Department said officers observed a man on a bicycle who they said matched the caller’s description, in the 6500 block of Eastern Avenue.

Investigators said an officer attempted to apprehend Muse near the I-95 southbound ramp.

Body worn camera footage captured a struggle between Muse and the officer when suddenly a single gunshot was heard.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, the footage captured Muse firing a revolver he was armed with.

Other responding officers then returned fire, shooting Muse.

Muse was pronounced dead on the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident.

A handgun was also recovered near the man, officials said.

The officers have been placed on administrative duties pending the result of the investigation, which is standard protocol.
