Brush fire spreads to vacant Wicomico County home, causing $25K in damage

An outdoor brush-burning operation accidentally spread to an abandoned home in Wicomico County on Thursday afternoon, causing an estimated $25,000 in damage, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

On May 28, around 1:47 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 4109 S. Upper Ferry Road in Eden.

The fire involved a wood-framed, single-family dwelling that was not occupied at the time of the incident.

Investigators determined that the property owner and workers were burning a large brush pile near the abandoned residence when the flames spread to the structure. The fire was ruled accidental.

The Allen Volunteer Fire Company responded with approximately 30 firefighters, who brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported, and no residents were displaced.

Authorities estimated damage to the structure at $20,000, with an additional $5,000 in damage to contents inside the home.

The case has been referred to Wicomico County Code Enforcement, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service, and the Maryland Department of the Environment’s Air and Radiation Division for possible violations of applicable codes and ordinances.
