MARYLAND (WBFF) — Maryland Del. C.T. Wilson, a Democrat, told The Baltimore Sun on Friday he is running for House Speaker, a day after Speaker Adrienne A. Jones, the first woman and the first Black person to serve as a presiding officer in the Maryland General Assembly, resigned from her leadership position.
“I’m not trying to be a compromise candidate. I’m not trying to be a spoil candidate. I put my hat in the ring last night because I’m a Christian. I have some humanity about myself. I’m not just going to run out and start making political calls. It’s not how I was built to be,” Wilson told the Sun in a phone interview about how some of his colleagues began seeking support for their speakership bids in the immediate aftermath of what he said was “devastating news.”
“I’m just telling people to keep the powder dry, listen to the issues. I’ve gotten a lot of support, a lot of positive feedback,” he continued. He added that this process isn’t “supposed to be like a prom election or, you know, this is not for a prom king or queen position. And so there should be some policy-driven discussions, not just who’s popular, who can lock in with votes.”
Wilson, who represents Charles County, chairs the House Economic Matters Committee and was named The Baltimore Sun’s 2023 Marylander of the Year after becoming the driving force behind the state’s landmark Child Victims Act. He was first elected in 2010 as the county’s first Black delegate.
