Cockeysville native to command first crewed moon mission in more than 50 years

Next month, Reid Wiseman will boldly go where no Marylander — or human — has gone before.

As commander of Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed mission around the moon in decades, the Baltimore County native will lead a small team of astronauts whose observations and research could help establish a long-term presence on Earth’s only satellite. And from there, perhaps even Mars.

The four-person crew includes NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Together, they are expected to travel farther into space than any crew before them, peaking several thousand miles beyond the far side of the moon before returning to Earth.

Unlike Apollo 13 in 1970, when a similar trajectory was unplanned in crisis, Artemis II’s path is by design.
