HEBRON, Md. (WBFF) — A barn fire early Sunday caused an estimated $140,000 in damage in Wicomico County, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Officials say the fire was discovered by a neighbor and was reported at 2:34 a.m. March 29, at 7996 Athol Road in Hebron.
The Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Department was the primary responding department. About 50 firefighters responded, and the fire was brought under control in about one hour.
Investigators said the fire started in the interior of the barn. The preliminary cause was accidental, resulting from combustibles being too close to a heat lamp that was being used to keep baby chicks warm.
Officials say the damage was estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $40,000 to the contents. No smoke alarms, fire alarms or sprinkler systems were reported at the property.
