Elkton duplex fire displaces six adults, causes $250,000 damage

An early-morning fire at a single-story duplex in Elkton displaced six adults and caused an estimated $250,000 in damages, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The fire was reported at 9:15 a.m. on May 31 at 231 Hollingsworth Manor in Cecil County. Investigators said the fire was discovered by a resident after he heard a popping sound coming from a rear bedroom.

Fire officials said that when the occupant checked the room, he found heavy smoke and evacuated safely.

Residents in the neighboring unit at 232 Hollingsworth Manor reported hearing a beeping noise before noticing the occupant outside and smoke billowing from the front door.

Investigators determined the fire originated in a rear bedroom. A preliminary investigation indicates the blaze was caused by an accidental electrical failure, possibly involving a power strip.

Smoke alarms were present and activated during the fire, according to investigators. The duplex was not equipped with fire alarms or a sprinkler system.

Two adults from Unit 231 and four adults from Unit 232 were displaced. No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross is assisting all displaced residents.

Investigators said the duplex is considered a total loss.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal urged residents to follow electrical safety tips, including:

  • Never force a three-prong cord into a two-slot outlet.
  • Install tamper-resistant electrical outlets if you have young children.
  • Replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit snugly.

The agency also advised against overloading power strips, using power strips with internal overload protection, replacing worn or damaged extension cords right away, and avoiding placing cords where they can be damaged or pinched, such as under a carpet or rug.
