UPDATE |

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration say an investigation is underway after a Cessna Citation business jet crashed at the Bedford County Airport on Wednesday morning.

Federal authorities say the incident was reported just before 11 a.m. as the plane was reportedly departing from the airport.

Video from the crash scene showed heavy damage to the plane, as well as to a fence that was on airport property.

Bedford Fire Chief Gary Cooper says the plane was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived as firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.

The FAA has since confirmed that there were two individuals on-board the plane at the time of the crash.

According to emergency officials, both the pilot and co-pilot reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Bedford Hospital for treatment.

Chief Cooper says a preliminary inspection of the crash site appears to show that the plane skidded off the runway, across Belden Drive and into a nearby field.

Online flight data shows that the plane was allegedly departing for Baltimore and the FAA has confirmed that the aircraft is owned by Shober’s Equipment LLC, a Bedford-based power equipment company.

Additional investigative information is expected to be provided by the FAA and the NTSB in the coming days.
