Family displaced, 2 responders hurt after house fire in Maryland

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — A house fire left a family of five without a home, injured a firefighter and a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service support volunteer Saturday morning in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Crews were called around 7:09 a.m. July 18 to the 9200 block of Warfield Road for a reported house fire, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).

When firefighters showed up, they found flames coming through the roof of the home.

Officials said everyone inside the home made it out safely before crews arrived.

During the firefighting operation, portions of the roof caved in, forcing crews to withdraw from the home and attack the fire from outside.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with injuries considered “non-life-threatening,” and is expected to survive.

An MCFRS support administrative volunteer was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

A total of five people, including three adults and two children, were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is helping the family with emergency housing and other needs.

Fire officials said residents reported strong lightning strikes in the area several hours before the fire, though investigators have not determined whether lightning played a role in starting the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
