Florida police use paddle boards to rescue Sykesville man who fled, jumped into river

As Florida law enforcement began reading Chase Cruz’s Miranda Rights on Monday evening, body-worn camera footage captured the moment the Sykesville man ran away and subsequently jump into the Halifax River.

Volusia Sheriff’s Office deputies and Daytona Beach Shores police officers hopped on paddle boards and rescued the 28-year-old on March 16, according to officials.

Cruz was brought to shore where he was charged with loitering or prowling and obstructing an officer without violence, according to online court records. Both charges are misdemeanors.

He made his first appearance in court on Tuesday.

Cruz has a jail arraignment scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m.
