Former Baltimore police officer Curlon Edwards has been sentenced to 15 years with all but six years suspended after pleading guilty to first-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense, the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City announced Friday. Edwards will also be put on the sex offender registry.

“Today’s guilty plea represents an important step towards justice for the survivor in this case. The harm caused by former Officer Curlon Edwards was profound, and no one—especially someone entrusted with authority—has the right to abuse their position and violate another person,” State’s Attorney Ivan Bates said, via a press release. “We hope this outcome affirms the survivor’s courage in coming forward and reinforces that our office will stand with victims, pursue accountability, and work to ensure their voices are heard.”

In 2024, Edwards, who was a 33-year-old Baltimore police officer at the time, met a 16-year-old girl through a mutual acquaintance. Officials said Edwards and the teen started a sexual relationship that lasted for nearly a year.

On June 30, 2025, Edwards and the victim “engaged in voluntary sexual conduct” at his home, located at 118 N. Howard Street in downtown Baltimore. Following the sexual conduct, Edwards demanded to see the victim’s phone, alleging she was being unfaithful. A fight ensued as Edwards took her phone and she tried to get it back from him. Officials said as the fight escalated, Edwards put the teen girl in a chokehold, causing her to lose consciousness for an “undetermined period of time.” The chokehold caused visible markings on the victim’s neck.

When the girl regained consciousness, Edwards gave his service weapon to her, demanding she shoot him. The victim grabbed the gun due to feeling scared and forced, but didn’t shoot him. Officials said Edwards then took the gun back and insisted the two make up. Fearing for her life, the victim acted like she was reconciling with Edwards and agreed to have sex with him again.

After having sex, Edwards drove the girl to Walmart to buy concealer to cover the marks on her neck and then brought her back to her home.

Officials said the victim promptly reported the incident to her mother and then law enforcement. She also submitted to a forensic exam.
