Frederick County farmer saves field after combine erupts in flames

A combine was destroyed in a fire at a Frederick County farm Thursday, but quick action by the farmer stopped the flames from spreading through a field.

Frederick County Fire and Rescue said crews were called around 5:03 p.m. and found the combine fully engulfed in flames. The fire was quickly put out.

The fire happened at Rocky Point Creamery. The business shared more details on social media, saying the destroyed combine belonged to “Farmer Chuck.”

Chuck was able to drive the burning combine to a section of the field that had already been harvested, preventing the flames from spreading through the rest of the grain.

“He kept a cool head and moved it to a harvested part of the field to prevent a huge field fire, and got out unscathed,” the post said.

The creamery called the combine a total loss but said they’re grateful the outcome wasn’t worse.

They also explained that fires involving combines and balers are not unusual during harvest because dry straw can ignite quickly if a spark happens.

“One spark and it can go up very quickly,” the post read. “In this case, it went FAST.”
